Richard Stephenson
Managing Director
Richard Stephenson is an award winning Communications Director with over 15 years in house, agency and political experience who, prior to joining CJP, served as Group Director of Public Relations at Royal Mail Group.
A postgraduate of Cardiff Journalism School, Richard started his career on an industrial placement in the press office at British Airways before moving into the City joining the financial services team at Citigate Dewe Rogerson. During his seven years at CDR Richard rose to become an Associate Director and was a Finalist in the PR Week Awards 2003 for a campaign about the Employers Liability crisis on behalf of the British Insurance Brokers' Association. He was nominated as the 'PR Practitioner of the Year' at the HeadlineMoney Awards 2003.
Richard joined Smithfield Consultants, a leading City PR agency, as a Board Director in 2005, where he was head of corporate and financial services and responsible for growing this arm of the business, providing Board level strategic advice across a wide range of communications issues, including media relations, crisis management, public affairs and corporate communications strategy. Richard's team was presented with the 'PR Manager of the Year' Award at the UK Pensions Awards, 2008 and the Corporate Communications Magazine 'PR Campaign of the Year', 2007.
In 2008 Richard joined Royal Mail Group as the Group Director of Public Relations, taking responsibility for PR across all Group companies, including Royal Mail, Post Office and Parcelforce. During his time at Royal Mail, Richard was responsible for one of the largest PR rosters in the UK and also spent time as the Acting Head of Public Affairs. He spearheaded a new approach to social media with one campaign achieving the number one position on Google for Post Office Travel Insurance.
His work with Post Office Financial Services led to the business achieving the number three position in the 2010 annual Presswatch Report (evaluation of media frequency and favourability of all financial services companies in the UK), which was an improvement of 16 places from 2009. The company also reached the number one position for three months of the year. Richard was short-listed for 'In House Practitioner of the Year' at the PRCA Awards 2010 and for 'PR Professional of the Year' at the CorpComms Awards 2010.
Richard has worked with senior politicians in the UK and USA and was most recently an adviser to a London based Ambassador. He has worked around the world on political missions including in Uganda and Pakistan. Richard was awarded the Freedom of the City of London, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, is a prolific charity fundraiser and is also fulfilling a boyhood dream by learning to fly a light aircraft.
